Q-Tronic is an automatic transmission with a manual shift function installed in Alfa Romeo cars. It was introduced in 2005. It is also based on the successful Aisin TF-80SC – a traditional automatic transmission with a hydraulic torque converter and planetary gear set. Manual operation is carried out with a special firmware. This allows the driver to manually control the engine torque, improving driving dynamics and the vehicle's off-road performance.

How Q-Tronic works
Under normal conditions, the Q -Tronic like a normal automatic transmission: The gears are shifted with the help of commands from the control unit. In addition, you can activate the sport and winter mode.
Once the driver places the control lever in a specific position, the current gear will remain engaged until the driver moves the lever to the “+” or “-” position. shifts up or down.
The technical data of Q-Tronic transmissions
Index | Number of gears | Max. Displacement, l | Max. Motor torque, Nm | Type of drive | Year of manufacture | Applicable Models |
TF-80SC | 6 | 2.5 | 450 | Front wheel, all-wheel drive | 2005 | Alfa Romeo 159; Alfa Romeo Spider; Alfa Romeo Brera |
Common defects of Q-Tronic gearboxes
- The hydraulic valve body breaks, what This causes juddering and vibration when shifting gears.
- Due to the wear of the torque converter's friction plates, the transmission begins to slip and vibrate.
- The wear of the brake bands causes severe impacts on the vehicle's body , where the gearbox is located.
